Hard Conversations Series

  • Arapaho United Methodist Church 1400 West Arapaho Road Richardson, TX, 75080 United States (map)

LGBTQ youth are disproportionately represented in the U.S. youth homelessness population. In his book “Coming Out to the Streets,” Dr. Brandon Andrew Robinson examines their lives. On September 15, we will continue the Hard Conversation Series, joined by Dr. Robinson, to learn more about LGBTQ youth homelessness. We will meet in Room 3 at noon. You are welcome to bring your lunch, and please let us know if you would like to participate virtually.

"Coming Out to the Streets" is based on ethnographic fieldwork in central Texas and looks into the lives of LGBTQ youth before they experience homelessness and later when they navigate the streets, deal with police, and access shelters. Through this documentation, Dr. Robinson shows how poverty and racial inequality shape the ways that LGBTQ youth negotiate their gender and sexuality before and while experiencing homelessness. In highlighting these voices, Dr. Robinson calls for queer and trans liberation through systemic change. If you are interested in reading along with us, you can purchase the book here.

We look forward to learning together as we delve into this important topic!
